What is Self-Actualization?

Self-Actualization is literally defined as achieving one's full potential. While affirmations are largely about the journey we take, self-actualization is about the final destination or the finished product. It is realizing the goals you've set for yourself and so much more.

Self-Actualization requires realistic expectations and reactions to the world around you. Those who are self-actualized have no real fear of the unknown and are ruled by logic rather than emotion.

In addition to this, they have accepted themselves and are not only comfortable with who they are, they are actually happy with themselves. They are no longer seeking to fill a void in their lives they are complete.

Someone who is self-actualized isn't hampered by societal conventions or expectations, rather, they are motivated towards growth and ever expanding horizons. They also have a tendency to need time alone.

In addition to being the destination, for many, self-actualization is the journey. It gets confusing because the journey and the destination share the same name, however, it is very possible to be on a journey of self-actualization without having reached the point of actually being self-actualized yet.

How can it be both the journey and the destination? Perhaps because they haven't thought of a better name for either process would be the short answer. However, the answer may be a bit more complicated than that. The journey teaches you the lessons required to reach the destination. Life sure has a tendency to be like that, doesn't it?

Every experience defines the person we become, and as humans, we are continuously evolving because we constantly experience new things. However, I believe that not only do our experiences shape us, but also our reactions to those experiences effect us profoundly as well.

Whether you are on your journey, considering the journey, or have reached the destination of self-actualization, you must admit, life is one heck of a ride no matter where you are sitting on the train.
